Bird watching tour Costa Rica

First you need to know: we leave at 5 o’clock in the morning!!!
This hike is set earlier than you might expect, but there is no better way starting a day than walking on a pristine beach enjoying a spectacular sunrise; we are sure you won’t regret it!! We walk about 30 to 40 minutes to Carate where we begin our tour; a morning full of Costa Rica birds is ahead of us!

The first species we have already spot along the beach. As soon as we get to the open areas around the airstrip and Carate River you’ll notice that this is a paradise for birding lovers. A little bit later we can see seedeater, tanagers, doves, hawks, Scarlet Macaws, warblers, hummingbirds, flycatchers, and various other species of birds.
As we hike up the river for about an hour we can spot wrens, woodpeckers, wood creepers, kingfishers, egrets and trogons.

We might even have the opportunity of watching the Central American Squirrel Monkey in the trees; it is a subspecies which can only be found in the south of Costa Rica. For topping this incredible walk we have breakfast along the beautiful waters of Carate River. We enjoy snacks and a hot coffee; you will love it!

Manakin Morning Birding Costa Rica

We meet at 5:45 am in the restaurant of the lodge. While we enjoy a cup of coffee or tea we start spotting some Costa Rican birds species around the lodge.

Having finished our coffee we head towards Corcovado National Park and hike one of our private trails until we get to the creek which the lodge has been named after: La Leona. This is a good place for watching flycatchers, kingfishers, hawks, sandpipers, and the unique Scarlet Macaws. We continue our hike in the forest where we can observe different species of birds like tanagers, honeycreepers, hummingbirds and others tropical birds as the manakins.

We recommend wearing traction shoes. Bring binoculars, water and insect repellant.
