Beach clean up in Carate

The day was perfect: no rain, no sun – just cool and cloudy; ideal for a beach cleanup.

June 18th 2009, members of the local community of Carate and more than 35 participants like local gold diggers, hotel owners, as well as tourists made a joint effort for cleaning up the beach in Carate. They covered an area of about 7 kilometers and all collected materials were classified for recycling.

It was a huge amount of trash; all garbage was picked up with reusable rice sacks for avoiding plastic bags and thus producing more trash.

We classified aluminum, plastic and glass; the event was completed by a talk of the sustainable coordinator from our lodge about recycling. Afterwards the various recycling materials were brought to the Recycling Center in Puerto Jiménez and to the local woman Dona Sonia who makes a living of recycling glass, plastic and aluminum.

The activity ended with a soccer game, music and Cuban poetry presented from a local gold-digger; we shared local food like pork, yucca, rice and salad.

It was a big success, thanks to all the staff of Luna Lodge and La Leona Eco Lodge; special thanks to Lana and all the volunteers who helped cleaning up the beach.

Together for a cleaner place to live!!
