Carate trail (seasonally)

Carate trail tour

We hike on the beach until we get to Carate; there we continue along the river where we have the opportunity of spotting some tropical birds of Costa Rica. While hiking uphill we pass the houses of the gold diggers. They extract gold from Carate River for making a living

After approximately 45 minutes walking along the river we get into primary rain forest where we walk straight uphill to the mountain ridge; we hike along the ridge until returning to the private nature reserve of La Leona Eco  Lodge. The last part of the trail is easier as we walk downhill to the lodge. Unlike the Corcovado tour we are now in a forest which grows at a height of 400 meters above sea level representing a totally different ecosystem than you experience during the Corcovado Tour. The vegetation here includes trees reaching up to a height of more than 50 meters. Many of these trees are covered with a great variety of Moss, Epiphytes, and Ferns.

You can see different types of monkeys like Spider and Howler Monkeys, lots of birds like curassows’, Scarlet Macaws, toucans, trogons, tanagers, honeycreepers, warblers, hummingbirds, and falcons among others. You have also the chance to see giant native trees of the area like Garlic Tree, Níspero, Ron-Ron, Kabobs, and Cedars.

On this trail you can feel yourself completely in harmony with the nature and its beauty. It is a hike full of peace, lots of contacts with nature and opportunities to admire unique and astonishing characteristics of the forest - 90 per cent of this trail is in primary rainforest
