Turtles Watching
The turtle watching tour is a great opportunity for our guests and all nature lovers to enjoy the abundant biodiversity that exists in the surrounding areas of La Leona Eco Lodge.
The turtle watching tour begins with a lecture given by the resident biologist at La Leona Eco Lodge, responsible for the monitoring of marine turtles in the beaches of Rio Oro, Carate and Madrigal.
This is a short explanatory lecture of the different types of turtles which come to lay their eggs on this part of Costa Rica’s South Pacific coast. The lecture offers information on the nutrition, ecological cycle, reproduction and dangers which marine turtles are suffering around the world.
The main objective of the turtle watching tour is to educate, promote and inform visitors of the importance of these species in the food chain and of the endangered situation of these marine turtles, in addition to strengthening the protection program implemented at Madrigal Beach.
According to global statistics, of every 1,000 baby turtles born, only one reaches adulthood. The main cause is natural depredation, followed by contamination of the oceans, irresponsible fishing with the use of nets and looting of their nests by man.
